Windows Defender Beta 2

Windows only: Microsoft has released Windows Defender Beta 2 (formerly Anti-Spyware) which protects your computer from spyware and other computer baddies. New features of Windows Defender include:

A redesigned and simplified user interface – Incorporating feedback from our customers, the Windows Defender UI has been redesigned to make common tasks easier to accomplish with a warning system that adapts alert levels according to the severity of a threat so that it is less intrusive overall, but still ensures the user does not miss the most urgent alerts. Improved detection and removal – Based on a new engine, Windows Defender is able to detect and remove more threats posed by spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Real Time Protection has also been enhanced to better monitor key points in the operating system for changes. Protection for all users – Windows Defender can be run by all users on a computer with or without administrative privileges. This ensures that all users on a computer are protected by Windows Defender.

An early version of this software turned me off because it kept me from running Cygwin (the irony!) but that little problem - plus the inability to wrestle the software into submission - seems to have been resolved in this version. While an Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy combo has been my computer's preferred cocktail, the nice thing about Windows Defender is that it can do automated, scheduled scans, a feature not available in the free version of Ad-Aware. Free download, Windows only, Windows validation required.

Common Struts Errors and Causes

Errors and exceptions are commonly encountered during web application development using Struts. Along with the exception or error messages themselves, potential causes of these errors are often listed along with links to additional resources.

Look at some of the common errors we get using struts....

Cannot retrieve mapping for action
Exception javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Cannot retrieve mapping for action /Login
Probable Cause No action defined in struts-config.xml to match that specified in the JSP's

Cannot retrieve definition for form bean null
Exception org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Cannot retrieve definition for form bean null
Probable Cause This exception typically occurs because Struts cannot find the form bean it expects for a specific action according to the mapping in the struts-config.xml file. Most often, this is probably because the name given to the form in the name attribute of the form-bean element does not match the name attribute of the associated action's action element. In other words, the action and form should each have a name attribute that matches exactly, including case. It has been reported that this error has been seen when no name attribute is associated with the action. If there is no name attribute in an action element, no form is associated with the action. Others have reported this error as merely a symptom of something completely unrelated (all too common), but the mismatch of name attributes in the form-bean and action elements in the struts-config.xml file is the usual culprit.

Colour Psychology

Colors often have different meanings in various cultures. And even in Western societies, the meanings of various colors have changed over the years. But today in the U.S., researchers have generally found the following to be accurate. You can find out the link here.

Black

Black is the color of authority and power. It is popular in fashion because it makes people appear thinner. It is also stylish and timeless. Black also implies submission. Priests wear black to signify submission to God. Some fashion experts say a woman wearing black implies submission to men. Black outfits can also be overpowering, or make the wearer seem aloof or evil. Villains, such as Dracula, often wear black.

White

Brides wear white to symbolize innocence and purity. White reflects light and is considered a summer color. White is popular in decorating and in fashion because it is light, neutral, and goes with everything. However, white shows dirt and is therefore more difficult to keep clean than other colors. Doctors and nurses wear white to imply sterility.

Red

The most emotionally intense color, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It is also the color of love. Red clothing gets noticed and makes the wearer appear heavier. Since it is an extreme color, red clothing might not help people in negotiations or confrontations. Red cars are popular targets for thieves. In decorating, red is usually used as an accent. Decorators say that red furniture should be perfect since it will attract attention.

The most romantic color, pink, is more tranquilizing. Sports teams sometimes paint the locker rooms used by opposing teams bright pink so their opponents will lose energy.

Blue

The color of the sky and the ocean, blue is one of the most popular colors. It causes the opposite reaction as red. Peaceful, tranquil blue causes the body to produce calming chemicals, so it is often used in bedrooms. Blue can also be cold and depressing. Fashion consultants recommend wearing blue to job interviews because it symbolizes loyalty. People are more productive in blue rooms. Studies show weightlifters are able to handle heavier weights in blue gyms.

Green

Currently the most popular decorating color, green symbolizes nature. It is the easiest color on the eye and can improve vision. It is a calming, refreshing color. People waiting to appear on TV sit in "green rooms" to relax. Hospitals often use green because it relaxes patients. Brides in the Middle Ages wore green to symbolize fertility. Dark green is masculine, conservative, and implies wealth. However, seamstresses often refuse to use green thread on the eve of a fashion show for fear it will bring bad luck.

Yellow

Cheerful sunny yellow is an attention getter. While it is considered an optimistic color, people lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms, and babies will cry more. It is the most difficult color for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused. Yellow enhances concentration, hence its use for legal pads. It also speeds metabolism.

Purple

The color of royalty, purple connotes luxury, wealth, and sophistication. It is also feminine and romantic. However, because it is rare in nature, purple can appear artificial.

Brown

Solid, reliable brown is the color of earth and is abundant in nature. Light brown implies genuineness while dark brown is similar to wood or leather. Brown can also be sad and wistful. Men are more apt to say brown is one of their favorite colors.

Tips on Subversion

Subversion is great software, essentially a major upgrade of CVS. Its branch support is stellar, for a few reasons:

  • Visibility: Branches are physical copies, you can see all branches, stored by convention in the /branches folder. This is unlike CVS (or VSS) where branches are placed in the time dimension and are invisible, hidden "behind" the CVS HEAD revision.
  • Efficiency: Branches are calculated as deltas and are not full physically copies, they are efficient and cheap to create.
  • Global revisoning: the entire repository gets versioned on every change. As a result merging can be applied as the merging of two source trees; this is much easier to think about and execute than merging between two sets of files, as is the case with CVS.
