Introduction to Using Patterns in Web Design

The biggest challenge for web designers is the unthinkably huge number of possible ways to solve any given problem. We usually don't think of this because we have our habits and traditions to fall back on, but there are literally billions of possible pixel combinations for each page we make.

There is a better way to manage this vast complexity than by making big decisions up front and hoping for the best. To make better sites — sites that are functional, beautiful, and "usable" — we have to break our design problems up into small independent chunks based on the real issues within our requirements. Christopher Alexander, who came up with this stuff, calls these chunks patterns. This article shows you how to sidestep your habits and assumptions and use patterns to make better design decisions. A lot of fancy stuff has been written about patterns. To be simple and clear in this introduction, I'll just call them chunks.

L Shard .NET

L Sharp .NET is a powerful Lisp-like scripting language for .NET. It uses a Lisp dialect similar to Arc but tightly integrates with the .NET Framework which provides a rich set of libraries. Currently L Sharp only ships with an interpreter, but the intention is to build a compiler which produces .EXE files.

L Sharp is free software distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. You can download the latest release from Sourceforge. You may also want to read Rob Blackwell's Web Log.

Java and .NET supporting dynamic language

With highly expressive syntax that is easy to read, write, and maintain, dynamic programming languages like Python and Ruby are extremely conducive to rapid development. Microsoft and Sun Microsystems have observed growing interest in dynamic programming, and plan to integrate more extensive support for dynamic language features in their respective managed language platforms. Several useful dynamic language features have already been added to .NET 2.0, most notably Lightweight Code Generation and DynamicMethod.
Many dynamic language enthusiasts are also interested in Parrot, an open source virtual machine designed specifically for dynamic languages. Initially conceived as the foundation for Perl 6, Parrot provides some extremely impressive features including a built-in grammar engine that vastly simplifies the process of language development. Although Parrot is far from complete, a number of languages built on top of it are at various stages of completion, including ports of Python, Ruby, Tcl, Lisp, and basic. Perl 6 developers claim that Parrot will eventually provide better performance than the JVM or .NET for dynamic scripting languages, but performance claims are currently debatable since Parrot is still in early stages of development. There are several significant architectural differences between Parrot and other prominent virtual machines, particularly the fact that Parrot is register-based, whereas Java's bytecode and .NET's Common Intermediate Language are stack-based.

Windows XP 15 Minute Tune-Up

A fine-tuned Windows XP PC can run quite fast even it's seriously lacking in the memory and CPU department. Before you chuck out your PC to buy a new one, try stripping some of the rust that's built-up over the years; the results may surprise you. Before you dive into your PC, it is absolutely critical that you determine what is slowing it down. Ignoring a bad hard drive could lead to catastrophic damage with data loss. Lack of sufficient RAM completely limits a PC's performance. Spyware and malware could be having a circus inside your OS - just like in 90%+ of other PCs online. There are other causes for PCs to run slow, but these are the most common.

Clickdensity web site click heat map

Clickdensity displays a heat map over your web page that shows which links visitors click the most. It just adds a javascript to your webpage which keeps track of the clicks clicked on the whole web page. This helps to know where the users are clicking the most of the area in the webpage. It helps in placing the Google-Adsense ads. I just registered a free trial version to my blog. If you want to know more information you can visit the article on LifeHacker. AJAX for the Java Developer

AJAX definitely has the buzz right now, but it might not be the right thing for you. AJAX is limited to the latest browsers, exposes browser compatibility issues, and requires new skill-sets for many. There is a good blog entry by Alex Bosworth on AJAX Mistakes which is a good read before you jump full force into AJAX.
While many developers will encounter AJAX via an existing framework, you may choose to dig deeper or provide functionality above and beyond what is provided. Java is a great fit for AJAX! You can use Java Enterprise Edition servers to generate AJAX client pages and to serve incoming AJAX requests, manage server side state for AJAX clients, and connect AJAX clients to your enterprise resources. The JavaServer Faces component model is a great fit for defining and using AJAX components. A Java developer that would like to add AJAX functionality to an application should read this article on FAQ's on AJAX for Java.
